A tribute service to commemorate the life of former first lady Rosalynn Carter will take place on Tuesday at Emory University in Atlanta. The service is set to be attended by her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, who is currently in hospice care. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will also be among the guests paying their respects at the service.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that President Biden and the first lady are looking forward to attending and offering their condolences. This gathering will also see the presence of all living former first ladies, including Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Michelle Obama, and Melania Trump.
Rosalynn Carter, who passed away on November 19 at the age of 96, has been honored with three days of tributes. The tribute ceremonies began on Monday when members of the Carters' Secret Service detail accompanied her casket from a medical center in Sumter County, Georgia. A wreath-laying ceremony was held at Georgia Southwestern State University, her alma mater, to acknowledge her advocacy for unpaid caregivers in U.S. households.
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Carter's remains were transported to Atlanta, where she will lie in repose at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Center on Monday night. The White House has also paid tribute by hanging a mourning drape over Rosalynn Carter's portrait and flying flags at half-staff.
The memorial service on Tuesday at Emory University will serve as a final farewell to the former first lady. On Wednesday, Rosalynn Carter will be laid to rest in a private burial ceremony in her hometown of Plains, Georgia.
The service and tributes throughout the week reflect the deep respect and admiration held for Rosalynn Carter and her contributions to the nation as a first lady. Her dedication to advocating for unpaid caregivers and commitment to public service will be remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
