In a recent development in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, a former business associate of Hunter and James Biden, Mervyn Yan, has provided a letter to Congress refuting claims of any contact with President Biden. The letter, obtained by CNN, states that Yan never had any personal or professional communication with the President, thereby undermining Republican allegations.
Yan's lawyer, Soumya Dayananda, wrote to House Oversight Chairman James Comer stating that her client did not engage in any business transactions, discussions, or associations with President Biden during his interactions with Hunter and James Biden. As the former Vice President of the United States, President Biden was never mentioned or involved in any of the business pursuits of Hudson West III, the joint venture involving Yan and the Biden family.
Dayananda's letter further asserts that Yan does not possess any materials or information that could substantiate claims of President Biden's alleged involvement in his family's business dealings. Moreover, it emphasizes that Yan, being a private citizen and not a public official, should not be a target of congressional oversight.
This latest development comes after Yan's previous letter in May, which outlined his status as a private citizen who never worked with President Biden, prompting the assertion that he should not be subjected to congressional scrutiny. However, Comer reportedly did not respond to the letter.
Yan, a Chinese-American businessman, had collaborated with Hunter and James Biden on the joint venture Hudson West III, which involved a Chinese-backed energy company. However, this collaboration ended in 2018, when Joe Biden was not in office. Yan's role in the joint venture was that of an independent consultant, and he was unaware of the funding sources for the initial $5 million operating budget.
The House Oversight Committee had subpoenaed Yan in November for his testimony, based on claims that he may possess information regarding President Biden's involvement in his family's business dealings. However, the veracity of Yan's lawyer's letter is being questioned by Republican members of the panel, leading to Yan being cross-examined about the claims in the letter.
Following the interview, Comer released a statement implying that Yan's testimony raised questions about the Bidens' dealings with the Chinese government-linked energy firm. On the other hand, Representative Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, stated that Yan testified there was no evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden and that he was not involved in or profited from his family's business dealings.
As Republicans continue to scrutinize Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings and express concerns about the transactions arising from the joint venture with Yan, the transcript from Yan's interview is expected to be released soon. The ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Biden continues to generate controversy and debate as new information comes to light.
