Portland, Oregon - A flood watch is currently in effect across the entire region west of the Cascades until Wednesday, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue. Small stream flooding is a possibility as the rain intensifies.
Early Sunday morning, the Portland metro area experienced an increase in rainfall as another Pacific frontal system approached the region. The rain is predicted to be heavy at times, gradually tapering off to scattered showers by the afternoon. Locals should prepare for blustery conditions as the front moves through the area.
While snow initially fell across the Cascade passes, it transitioned to rain on Sunday morning as snow levels rose to nearly 6000 feet overnight. As a result, the fresh powder on the slopes will likely melt significantly over the next 72 hours. Furthermore, a warm atmospheric river is forming off the Pacific coast, which is expected to target the Pacific Northwest directly until Wednesday.
Meteorologists anticipate a significant amount of rain in the upcoming days. By Tuesday evening, the Willamette Valley could experience between 2-3 inches of rainfall. Some locations along the Oregon coast and in the Coast Range might even receive 4-6 inches of rain during this period.
Snowfall levels are expected to return to pass levels later in the week as the upper-level flow turns more northwesterly. With the persistent rainfall, residents are advised to keep their rain jackets and boots readily available for the next few days.
As the flood watch remains in effect until Wednesday, residents should stay informed about any potential hazards or warnings issued by local authorities. It is crucial to stay cautious during this period of heavy rain and possible flooding.
Stay tuned for further updates on weather conditions in the Pacific Northwest and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this ongoing weather event.
