WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A large accident on Florida's Turnpike in Palm Beach County resulted in a five-vehicle crash, causing the highway to be temporarily closed in both directions, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue. The incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, was declared a "mass casualty incident" as three people were sent to the hospital for medical treatment.

The crash took place when a pickup truck with dual rear wheels, hauling three other vehicles on a trailer, collided with a passenger car, as reported by PBCFR. Additionally, several other cars sustained minimal damage in the incident.

Emergency units arrived at the scene and found one individual trapped inside a vehicle, requiring heavy extrication. The person was ultimately freed from the vehicle and transported to a trauma center by TraumaHawk, the medical transport helicopter service provided by PBCFR. Two other individuals, including a second trauma alert, were taken to the hospital by ground transportation. Thankfully, all other involved parties declined the need for medical attention.

The incident involved approximately five vehicles in total, according to PBCFR.

At around 2:15 PM, the scene was turned over to the Florida Highway Patrol, who will handle the crash investigation to determine the cause and sequence of events leading up to the accident.

The closure of Florida's Turnpike in both directions caused significant traffic congestion in the area, with authorities urging motorists to use alternate routes during the investigation and cleanup process.

As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding drivers to remain vigilant, practice safe driving habits, and remain cautious of potential hazards on the road.
