In a recent development, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has had his electronic devices seized by the FBI as part of an ongoing federal investigation. This comes after the FBI previously searched the home of Adams' top fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, and is reportedly looking into potential illegal foreign donations made to the mayor's campaign.
The seizure of Mayor Adams' electronic devices took place on Monday, according to confirmation from his office. The mayor, however, has firmly denied any wrongdoing in the matter. In a statement, Adams, who is a former member of law enforcement himself, expressed his expectation for his staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any investigation.
"As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any sort of investigation—and I will continue to do exactly that. I have nothing to hide," said Adams.
The federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York have declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. The FBI also chose not to provide any comment to ABC News regarding the seizure of the devices.
Adams' campaign attorney, Boyd Johnson, disclosed that an individual had recently acted improperly, and this information had promptly been reported to investigators. Johnson emphasized that the mayor has not been accused of any wrongdoing and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
"In the spirit of transparency and cooperation, this behavior was immediately and proactively reported to investigators. The Mayor has been and remains committed to cooperating in this matter. On Monday night, the FBI approached the mayor after an event. The Mayor immediately complied with the FBI's request and provided them with electronic devices. The mayor has not been accused of any wrongdoing and continues to cooperate with the investigation," stated Johnson.
Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that investigators approached Mayor Adams after an event on Monday evening to request all the devices he had on his person, including an iPad and a phone. Subsequently, the mayor's office turned over additional devices.
According to sources, most of the devices have since been returned to Mayor Adams. The exact nature of the investigation and its connection to the alleged illegal foreign donations from Turkey through a Brooklyn construction company remains undisclosed.
As the federal investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen what implications this will have for Mayor Eric Adams and his administration. For now, Adams maintains his innocence and asserts that he will fully cooperate with authorities in order to address the allegations.
