Pleasanton, California - A tragic accident on Monday afternoon claimed the lives of three individuals and left five others injured after their SUV experienced a tire blowout, causing the vehicle to collide with a tree along Interstate Highway 680 near Pleasanton. Authorities have reported that two of the deceased passengers were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the driver of a Honda Pilot contacted the authorities, stating that the rear tire had blown out, leading to the vehicle veering down an embankment. At approximately 2:30 p.m., while traveling south of Sunol Boulevard, the driver was navigating through slippery road conditions due to rain.
Upon the tire blowout, the driver attempted to regain control by steering sharply to the left. However, the left tire rode up the concrete wall bordering the highway, resulting in a loss of control, explained CHP Officer Tyler Hahn. The vehicle then crossed all lanes and ultimately crashed into a tree on the right shoulder, propelling the SUV into the air before landing back down on the embankment.
Tragically, two passengers who were not restrained by seat belts were ejected from the vehicle. One individual passed away at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries after being transported to a hospital. Another passenger, initially reported as having major injuries, unfortunately, also died at Eden Medical Center. Their identities have not yet been released by the Alameda County coroner.
Among the injured passengers were two infants, both of whom sustained only minor injuries. They were promptly transported to UC Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland for evaluation and treatment. The remaining injured individuals, including the driver, were reported to have minor injuries and received medical attention.
The investigation into the crash continues, with the vehicle being examined for any evidence of a tire blowout. While no suspicion of alcohol or drug involvement has been reported, Officer Hahn emphasized the importance of wearing seat belts, urging all motorists to adhere to this critical safety measure.
The collision resulted in the closure of two right lanes on the freeway for a duration of four hours, as authorities responded to the scene and commenced their investigation. Authorities advise caution while driving and remind the public of the necessity of seat belt usage to prevent such tragic incidents.
As the community mourns the loss of the three individuals and offers support to those injured, the full details and circumstances surrounding this devastating accident await further investigation.
