In a tragic incident that occurred last year, Gloria Serge, an 85-year-old woman, was attacked and killed by an alligator while walking her small dog near a lake in Spanish Lakes Fairways, a retirement community in Fort Pierce, Florida. Now, her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the owner of the community, Wynne Building Corporation.
Surveillance footage captured by a wildlife camera revealed the horrifying moment when a large alligator emerged from the lake and lunged at Serge and her dog. The distressing footage, released by Inside Edition, also included excerpts from a 911 call made by Serge's neighbor who witnessed the attack in horror.
According to wildlife officials, the alligator responsible for the attack was estimated to be 10 feet long. After a challenging wrangling process involving six individuals, the alligator was eventually captured and euthanized. Serge's remains were later recovered, as confirmed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
On behalf of Serge's estate, her son, William Serge, filed the lawsuit on Thursday, seeking a minimum of $50,000 in damages from Wynne Building Corporation. He expressed the unimaginable pain and heartbreak caused by his mother's tragic last moments during a news conference.
The lawsuit holds Wynne Building Corporation accountable for the deadly alligator attack, asserting that the company either knew or should have known about the presence of the alligator on the property but failed to inform residents or take any necessary steps for its removal. The family's legal representatives claim that evidence obtained will demonstrate that maintenance workers in the community regularly fed the alligator chicken scraps and had even given it the name "Henry."
As the legal process unfolds, the family intends to seek a jury trial in their pursuit of justice for Gloria Serge's untimely and devastating loss.
