In a heartbreaking turn of events, the family of 14-year-old Adriana Kuch has filed a lawsuit against the Central Regional Board of Education, the school district's former superintendent, and others, seeking justice for their daughter's untimely death. The tragic incident occurred on February 1, 2023, when Adriana was brutally attacked by a group of teenagers in a hallway at Central Regional High School in Berkeley Township, New Jersey.
Adriana had reportedly been subjected to bullying in the lead-up to the assault. Shockingly, the gruesome attack was filmed and promptly shared on social media, where she became the target of further vitriol and cyberbullying. The video, reviewed by CNN, depicted Adriana being repeatedly hit with a water bottle before being punched and kicked.
The online harassment took a toll on Adriana, and less than two days after the assault, she took her own life at home. In a lawsuit filed just days ago against the Central Regional Board of Education, the school district's former superintendent, Triantafillos Parlapanides, and others, her family claims that Adriana's actions were a direct result of the emotional distress, humiliation, and embarrassment she experienced.
Seeking justice for their beloved daughter, Adriana's father, Michael Kuch, expressed his family's sorrow and frustration over the lack of action taken by the school administrators. "Adriana was the light of our lives, and one year after her horrific and needless death, we are still waiting for justice," he declared in a statement provided by the family's attorney.
The lawsuit, filed on Monday, accuses the defendants of negligence, defamation, and infliction of emotional distress. Specifically, it alleges that the Central Regional Board of Education had a duty to supervise, monitor, and train staff regarding harassment, intimidation, and bullying. The civil complaint also asserts that the school district was responsible for developing and implementing anti-harassment, intimidation, and bullying policies consistent with the New Jersey Anti-Bullying Statute.
CNN has reached out to both the Central Regional Board of Education and Triantafillos Parlapanides for comment on the lawsuit. The shocking tragedy has sparked a conversation about the need for stronger measures against bullying in schools and the importance of proactive intervention to protect students facing such torment.
It is a devastating reminder that bullying, both physical and cyber, can have severe and lasting consequences on the mental health of young individuals. The lawsuit has brought to the forefront the urgent necessity for schools to address and mitigate bullying, ensuring the safety and well-being of their students.
As the litigation unfolds, the Kuch family continues to seek justice for Adriana and hopes that their legal action will pave the way for meaningful change and the prevention of future tragedies caused by unchecked bullying in schools.
