In a recently verified video, the Great Omari Mosque in Gaza City's old town has been shown to have suffered significant damage, with only its minaret remaining intact. Hamas has accused the Israeli military of bombing the site, referring to it as a "heinous, barbaric crime." The Israeli military has not responded to these allegations.
The Great Omari Mosque has a long history of destruction, having been rebuilt multiple times due to various conflicts and an earthquake. However, this latest incident has caused widespread concern and condemnation.
Gaza's Hamas-run antiquities ministry has accused Israel of specifically targeting historical and archaeological sites in the enclave. They have requested assistance from the United Nations' cultural agency, Unesco, to protect these sites from further damage.
Israel, on the other hand, has accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure, including mosques and schools, as hideouts for their fighters. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) initiated their military operation in Gaza following a deadly attack by Hamas on 7 October.
According to Israel, the Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, with 240 others being taken hostage. Some of the hostages were released during a short-lived ceasefire. Hamas, however, claims that Israel's retaliatory campaign has resulted in the deaths of over 17,177 people, including approximately 7,000 children.
The situation in Gaza since the 7 October raid has been marked by escalating tensions and violence. The UN Secretary-General has described the war in Gaza as a "risk to international peace and security," a sentiment that Israel vehemently rejects.
Social media pictures have also emerged showing Israeli troops guarding dozens of men, who appear to be in their underwear, in north Gaza. The circumstances surrounding this incident remain unclear.
As the conflict continues to unfold, many are left questioning the motives behind Hamas's attack on Israel and what lies ahead for the embattled Gaza Strip. Only time will tell if there will be a resolution to this deeply entrenched conflict that has caused immense hardship for the people of both Israel and Gaza.
