In a heartwarming turn of events, a Texas Longhorn steer named Ricardo, who made headlines after escaping from a slaughterhouse, has found refuge and compassionate care at the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue in Wantage, New Jersey. Captured in a touching video, Ricardo is seen being gently awakened from sedation as Mike Stura, the founder of the sanctuary, assures him that he is safe now.
Ricardo's incredible journey began when he was spotted wandering along train tracks near Newark's Penn Station on Thursday morning. The sight of the chestnut-colored steer caused quite a commotion and disrupted train services for approximately 45 minutes. Identified as a 1.5-year-old Texas longhorn steer weighing between 750 and 800 pounds, Ricardo's escape captivated the attention of many.
Thanks to the collective efforts of officers from the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit and the Port Authority Police Department, Ricardo was eventually corralled and brought to safety in a fenced lot near Newark Liberty International Airport. From there, he was entrusted to the care of Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue, a haven for over 450 animals spread across a 232-acre farm.
Upon arrival at the sanctuary, Ricardo underwent a thorough examination by the sanctuary veterinarian, who confirmed his overall well-being. The yellow numbered tag dangling from his ear served as a sign of his new beginning. In the heartwarming video, Mike Stura is seen reassuring Ricardo, praising his beauty, and urging him to focus on recovery and drinking plenty of water.
The sanctuary expressed their joy and relief for Ricardo, stating that his fight for survival had paid off. Their social media post emphasized how handsome he looked despite the ordeal he had endured. However, as a precautionary measure, Ricardo will be quarantined from other animals for several days. Once cleared, Stura will assess the compatibility of Ricardo with the other bulls and cows at the sanctuary, hoping for a harmonious integration.
Following the viral nature of Ricardo's escapade, the New York Red Bulls even humorously suggested that he may have been looking for their soccer stadium in Newark.
Ricardo's story serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of animals and the importance of havens like the Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue. With his remarkable tale of escape and ultimate rescue, Ricardo has captured the hearts of many, and the sanctuary staff will strive to ensure that he lives a long, happy life in his new home.
As Ricardo settles into his new surroundings, the world eagerly watches with hope for his bright future at the sanctuary.
