Renowned entrepreneur and Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a visit to Israel, where he met with top leaders and toured a kibbutz that was attacked by Hamas militants. Musk's visit to the war-torn region came amidst escalating concerns over hatred and antisemitism on his social media platform, previously known as Twitter.
During his visit, Musk met with Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who expressed his disapproval of the content on the platform. The billionaire entrepreneur also joined Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for a tour of the Kfar Azza kibbutz, which was a victim of a deadly assault by Hamas militants.
As rain fell, Musk donned a protective vest and documented the devastation through photographs and videos on his phone. This visit coincided with the extension of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas.
Musk and Netanyahu visited the homes of the victims, including the family of a 4-year-old girl, Abigail Edan, who held dual Israeli-U.S. citizenship and was held hostage by Hamas. The emotional impact of witnessing the aftermath of the attack was evident in Musk's conversation with Netanyahu, where he expressed his concern over the killings of civilians, especially children.
The discussions between Musk and Israeli leaders revolved around the conflict, the protests it sparked, and the broader Middle East situation. However, the issue of antisemitism online was not explicitly addressed during the talks. Previously, Netanyahu had urged Musk to take action against hatred during a meeting in September.
President Herzog did not shy away from confronting Musk over the presence of hate speech and antisemitism on his platform. He emphasized the role that Musk plays in combating this hatred, stating that "the platforms you lead have a huge reservoir of hatred, hatred of Jews and antisemitism."
Acknowledging the emotional toll of the visit, Musk committed to stopping the spread of hate, saying, "We have to do whatever is necessary to stop the hate." He also highlighted the power of propaganda in influencing individuals' beliefs, referencing Hamas militants who have been fed lies since their childhood.
Elon Musk has faced accusations from the Anti-Defamation League and others of tolerating antisemitic messages on his platform since acquiring it last year. As scrutiny increased during the Israel-Hamas conflict, major brands like Disney and IBM paused their advertising on the platform due to concerns over ads appearing alongside pro-Nazi and white nationalist content.
In response to the controversy, Musk tweeted during his visit that "actions speak louder than words." His platform, formerly known as Twitter, has sued Media Matters, accusing the nonprofit of manufacturing a report aimed at driving advertisers away and destroying the platform.
Aside from the issues related to social media content, Musk and the Israeli government also settled a disagreement surrounding his Starlink satellite internet company. An agreement was reached, stating that Starlink would require government approval to operate in Gaza, to prevent potential misuse by Hamas for militant activities.
The details regarding the invitation of Musk to Israel were not disclosed by the Israeli government spokesperson, and there has been no comment from Elon Musk's platform, X. However, his visit to Israel has drawn attention to the ongoing debate on the responsibility of social media platforms in combating hatred and antisemitism.
