Cities across the Eastern U.S. are gearing up for a powerful storm system set to unleash torrential rain, high winds, and severe thunderstorms along the East Coast, affecting a wide region from Florida to New England. The system, which will develop in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday, is expected to intensify as it moves towards the Eastern Seaboard, with its impacts likely to be felt through Monday.
Already, portions of Florida are under flood and wind alerts as the storm approaches. The Weather Channel has warned of possible tornadoes resulting from the severe weather. Florida Power & Light Co., the largest power utility in the state, is actively responding to outages caused by the storm. They have urged residents to exercise caution and stay away from downed power lines and damaged electrical equipment.
Sunday is expected to bring torrential rain to nearly the entire state of Florida, while severe thunderstorms, including the possibility of isolated tornadoes, threaten parts of the state such as Tampa and Orlando. As the storm system progresses on Sunday, heavy rain and strong winds are forecasted for the mid-Atlantic coast.
In New York, rainfall is expected to begin late Sunday morning and persist through Monday night. The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch for areas including Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, coastal Connecticut, and New London County. Wind advisories have been issued for Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, southern Westchester, and most of interior southern Connecticut.
The New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services has called on residents in the Mid-Hudson Valley, eastern Catskills, southern Capital Region, and possibly parts of Long Island to be prepared for potential flooding, as the storm could bring up to three inches of rain. Governor Kathy Hochul has assured the public that her office will closely monitor conditions and be ready to assist local governments in the event of flooding.
In Boston, the National Weather Service has reported a sunny but cloudy day on Saturday. Nevertheless, they have warned that conditions are expected to deteriorate late Sunday into Monday as the storm brings heavy precipitation and gusty winds to southern New England.
With the looming threat of this major storm system, residents are advised to stay informed, heed warnings from authorities, and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and protect their property.
