Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump continues to hold a substantial lead over his challenger Nikki Haley in the upcoming primary election in New Hampshire, according to the newly released Suffolk University/NBC10 Boston/Boston Globe tracking poll.
With just three days remaining until the state's primary on January 23, the survey results show Trump at 53%, a one-percentage-point increase from the previous day. Meanwhile, Haley saw a slight boost as well, rising from 35% to 36%. Ron DeSantis trails behind at a distant third with 7%, up by one percentage point. The survey, which was conducted from January 18-19, gathered responses from 500 likely Republican primary voters, with a margin of error of 4.4%.
Interestingly, when participants were asked about their second choice, 34% selected DeSantis, while Trump and Haley received 8% and 7% respectively.
The poll highlights that a majority of New Hampshire voters have already made up their minds about their preferred candidate for Tuesday's primary. Over 88% of those surveyed stated that they are "not at all likely" or "not very likely" to change their decision, representing a 1% increase from the previous day.
The survey also delved into the motivations of the voters. When Haley supporters were asked whether their vote was driven more by support for Haley or opposition to Trump, the results showed a shift from the previous day. On Saturday, 47% said it was a vote for Haley, while 46% stated it was a vote against Trump. This marks a significant change from Friday, when 54% were against Trump and only 42% were for Haley. In contrast, when Trump supporters were questioned, 90% stated that their vote was primarily in support of Trump, compared to just 7% who said their vote was influenced by opposition to Haley.
As the primary approaches, all three candidates – Trump, Haley, and DeSantis – have scheduled events in New Hampshire. Trump and Haley were both in the state on Friday, making their final pitches to voters.
