In recent months, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kinshasa, has been plunged into chaos due to severe floods. The overflowing River Congo, which stretches across much of the country, has spilled into homes and submerged roads, leaving residents to navigate through the waterways in canoes. This year, the river has reached its highest level in six decades, causing widespread destruction and claiming the lives of more than 300 people, according to officials.

Speaking to the BBC, distressed residents of Kinshasa explained how the floods have obliterated vital institutions. Schools, hospitals, and churches have been washed away, leaving the community in a state of despair. Denise Tuzola, a local resident, revealed that her own house is now completely filled with water. The inundation has also affected the city's small rivers and streams, many of which serve as open sewers, exacerbating the situation.

Disturbing scenes of the flooding show individuals wading through thigh-level water, hauling canoes carrying passengers behind them. Trucks cautiously navigate through the submerged streets, while discarded bottles float on the water's surface, signifying the extent of the devastation.

Concerns were raised by the RVF, the agency responsible for overseeing the Congo's waterways, back in December. They warned of "exceptional flooding" around the Kinshasa area caused by heavy rainfall. However, even before this warning, provinces such as Mongala and Ituri had already experienced severe flooding.

Reports indicate that the River Congo has risen to nearly 6.26 meters, a level not seen since the record-breaking floods in 1961. The nearby city of Kisangani has also been heavily impacted, with over 200 houses submerged, as revealed by the city's mayor.

The turmoil caused by the Congo River extends beyond the borders, affecting Congo-Brazzaville. More than 336,000 people and 34 health facilities have been impacted by flooding in the neighboring country, according to the World Health Organization.

Climate change is believed to play a significant role in the frequency and intensity of flooding incidents. The warming atmosphere is known to create conditions favorable for extreme rainfall, leading to such devastating consequences.

This is not the first time that Kinshasa has faced destructive floods. Just over a year ago, over 120 people lost their lives due to similar flooding incidents.

In addition to the ongoing struggle posed by the floods, the country is currently grappling with political crises. Recently, three ministers and four governors were disqualified from the chaotic vote that took place last month.

The situation in Kinshasa remains dire as residents continue to contend with the aftermath of the floods. It is crucial that efforts be made to provide immediate relief and support to those affected, while also addressing the long-term impact of climate change to mitigate future disasters.
