In their bid to regain control of the House in 2024, Democrats are focusing their strategy on turning Speaker Mike Johnson into a liability for Republicans. While GOP lawmakers running for reelection in swing districts downplay Johnson's conservative positions, Democrats argue that his record reveals a streak of extremism that could alienate voters nationwide.
Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Suzan DelBene, asserts that Johnson's ideologies remain a concern, stating, "what we may have a new face, but the extremism is still there. In fact, he may be even more extreme." DelBene acknowledges that many voters may not be familiar with Johnson, but she believes that as more information about him surfaces, he can become a significant liability for the Republican Party.
DelBene highlights Johnson's stance on key issues, such as his support for overturning the 2020 election, advocating for a nationwide abortion ban, and proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare. These positions, she argues, are out of touch with the American people.
Contrary to past Republican tactics linking vulnerable Democrats with Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Republicans find it challenging to portray Johnson negatively. GOP strategist Ken Spain notes that Johnson's relative anonymity makes him less of a political vulnerability, at least for now. However, Spain warns that if the majority cannot effectively function and handle the challenges ahead, Johnson's leadership could become problematic.
Speaker Johnson represents a shift in the Republican Party, hailing from the grassroots and evangelical base rather than having close ties to entities like the Chamber of Commerce and corporate donors. Though he may not immediately match the fundraising prowess of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Johnson has proven to be a successful fundraiser in his own right, aligning with the party's populist and blue-collar wing.
While Republicans are confident in their ability to hold and grow the majority in the House, Democrats are determined to paint Johnson and all Republican incumbents and challengers as extremists. They aim to ensure that voters do not perceive Johnson as a kinder, softer, or more moderate speaker. Democrats plan to spend the next year highlighting their concerns and exposing what they view as extreme positions within the Republican Party.
As the battle for the House intensifies, approximately 60 out of the 435 House districts will be key battlegrounds. Rep. John Duarte, R-Calif., admits that Johnson is more conservative than he is but emphasizes that their legislative agenda and bringing important issues to the floor matter more than personal positions.
Overall, Democrats are focused on scrutinizing Speaker Mike Johnson's record and beliefs, hoping to capitalize on any potential vulnerabilities and sway voters ahead of the 2024 elections.
