In a recent interview on "Face the Nation," Democratic mayors Brandon Johnson of Chicago and Mike Johnston of Denver expressed concern over the lack of coordination in the transportation of migrants to their cities and others by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. They claim that the haphazard approach has led to disorder and inefficiency in managing the arrivals.

Mayor Johnson accused Governor Abbott, a Republican, of intentionally causing chaos by sending busloads of migrants to cities without any prior coordination. He further criticized the governor for now resorting to placing individuals on airplanes and flying them into various cities, which he believes poses a threat to national security and perpetuates chaos.

Mayor Johnston of Denver raised specific issues with the timing of the arrivals, expressing the city's desire for buses to arrive during regular hours when staff is available to receive the migrants. He emphasized the importance of a coordinated and humanitarian approach to effectively assist both the city and the newcomers.

Both mayors called for increased federal support to alleviate the strain on city resources caused by the influx of migrants. They joined other major city mayors in November by sending a letter to the White House, requesting additional financial support, expanded work authorization for migrants, and a coordinated entry response to ensure the seamless transit of new arrivals to their final destinations.

The mayors highlighted the unsustainable burden placed on local economies and urged the federal government to take responsibility for what they view as an international and federal crisis. Mayor Johnson emphasized that local governments cannot be expected to shoulder the financial burden indefinitely.

Mayor Johnston specifically mentioned the plight of migrants from Venezuela, who do not qualify for temporary protected status nor have an expedited path to work authorization in the United States. He expressed the need to expand work authorization opportunities for recent arrivals to match them with available job opportunities.

While state and local leaders continue to request federal assistance in managing the record number of migrants, Congress has been engaged in ongoing debates surrounding border policy changes. Democrats are considering limits on asylum and increased deportations in exchange for Republican support for additional aid to Ukraine.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham offered his perspective on Governor Abbott's actions, describing them as those of a desperate man trying to protect his state. Senator Graham highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach and urged the Biden administration to implement policies similar to Title 42, which allowed for the quick expulsion of unauthorized migrants at the southern border during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As discussions continue and partisan perspectives clash, the issue of coordinating the transportation and management of migrants remains a pressing concern for all involved parties. The Democratic mayors' call for improved coordination and federal support highlights the challenges faced by local governments in handling the current migration influx.
