George Santos. The delay, which is expected to last until Thursday at least, allows party leaders more time to carefully evaluate their options before deciding on a nominee for the upcoming special election.

Jay Jacobs, the party chief and Nassau County boss, confirmed on Monday that the Democratic leaders, including Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Rep. Greg Meeks, and Governor Hochul, want to ensure a thorough vetting process to select the best candidate. Despite rumors suggesting that former Rep. Tom Suozzi is a front-runner, Jacobs emphasized that nothing is set in stone and there will be no "anointment" of any candidate.

While Suozzi is considered a strong contender, another prominent candidate being considered is ex-state Sen. Anna Kaplan. The party leaders have indicated that they are looking at "three or four" potential candidates.

The delay in the announcement may also be seen as a strategic move to send a message to Suozzi, who had previously abandoned the seat to run unsuccessfully in the primary against Governor Hochul. Kaplan took the opportunity to criticize Suozzi, highlighting his decision to step away from Congress.

On the Republican side, interviews and vetting processes are currently underway for up to 20 potential candidates. Some notable names in consideration include Nassau County legislator Mazi Pilip, state Sen. Jack Martins, Air Force veteran Kellen Curry, and retired NYPD Detective Mike Sapraicone.

Former Rep. George Santos, who was expelled from Congress and is awaiting trial on federal charges, has spent the weekend airing his grievances on Twitter, blaming fellow New York Republicans for his ouster.

Governor Hochul has one week to announce the date for the special election, which must take place between 70 and 80 days from the announcement. This would place the election in late February, and the winner would serve the remainder of Santos's original two-year term.

Both parties will have the opportunity for primary and general elections in November for a fresh two-year term. The outcome of the special election will likely heavily influence the party's nomination for the general election, leaving the loser with limited chances for future opportunities.

As the Democratic leaders continue their deliberations, all eyes are on who will ultimately be chosen to represent the party in the intense race to fill the vacant NY-03 congressional seat.
