In a bold move, Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat from California, has filed a privileged resolution on the House floor to expel Republican Representative George Santos. This action has officially triggered another push to remove Santos from Congress amid allegations of misconduct. House leaders are now required to schedule a vote on the resolution within two legislative days.
The resolution comes nearly two weeks after a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee, which accused Representative Santos of prioritizing personal gain over his duty to uphold the Constitution, federal law, and ethical principles.
Representative Garcia issued a statement expressing the urgency to remove Santos, stating, "The time has finally come to remove George Santos from Congress. If we're going to restore faith in government, we must start by restoring integrity in the U.S. House of Representatives." Garcia emphasized the importance of having representatives whom the American people can trust, who do not build their careers on deceit and falsehoods.
Joining as co-lead, Representative Dan Goldman, a Democrat from New York, asserted in a statement that Santos is unfit for public office, referring to him as an "admitted liar, fraud, and cheat." The recent release of the Ethics Committee report has only further confirmed their belief in Santos' unsuitability to hold office.
It is worth noting that this resolution filed by Representative Garcia is separate from the one initiated by House Ethics Committee Chairman and Republican Representative Michael Guest earlier this month. Guest's resolution has not yet been filed as privileged.
This is not the first time Representative Garcia has called for Santos' expulsion. In the spring, Garcia forced a vote on the matter, but then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy referred the resolution to the House Ethics Committee, avoiding a full floor vote.
The House Ethics Committee's report, released earlier this month, revealed damning details regarding Santos' alleged misuse of campaign funds for personal enrichment. The list of expenditures includes Botox treatments, trips to Atlantic City, designer goods, and purchases on the adult content website OnlyFans. The report also mentioned that Santos is facing separate federal charges, adding to the complexity of the situation.
Expelling a member of Congress requires a high threshold, as it necessitates a two-thirds majority vote in the chamber. However, an increasing number of House Republicans, who previously did not vote to remove Santos, have expressed their support for his expulsion after the release of the scathing Ethics Committee report.
When questioned about his plans, Representative Santos stated that he expects to be expelled from Congress. Despite the federal charges he is facing, Santos has pleaded not guilty. He dismissed the bipartisan report as a "politicized smear" and announced that he will not seek re-election in 2024, intending to fulfill the remainder of his term.
The upcoming expulsion vote will determine whether Representative Santos will be removed from Congress and further shape the integrity of the U.S. House of Representatives.
