New Orleans, Louisiana - Interstate 10 in the New Orleans area was closed early Tuesday morning after a deadly crash occurred due to dense smoke and fog, reminiscent of the "super fog" that engulfed the region last month, according to police.

The accident, which happened around 4:30 a.m., involved multiple vehicles and was a result of poor visibility caused by the thick smoke and fog. Videos captured by motorists showed cars disappearing in the dense smoke, highlighting the dangerous conditions on the road. Sarah Trimble, one of the motorists, described the inability to see the tail lights of the truck in front of her as she crossed railroad tracks on her way to work. Other videos showed the smoke enveloping cars, making them almost invisible except for the outline of their brake lights.

The National Weather Service explained that the smoke from fires near New Orleans had become trapped under a shallow layer of the atmosphere near the ground along Interstate 10 in eastern Orleans Parish. As a result, visibility was severely reduced, with motorists only able to see a quarter-mile or less. Christopher Bannan, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, emphasized that the thick smoke had nowhere to dissipate, making it even more hazardous for drivers.

The weather service issued a dense smoke advisory, warning people about the hazardous conditions along I-10 and also reported reduced visibility along Interstate 55 in Louisiana.

Details about the motorist who tragically lost their life in the crash were limited, with police confirming that it was a man who died after being transported to a hospital. No further information regarding the victim's identity or the circumstances of the crash has been released.

This incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers that can arise when natural phenomena like the super fog occur. Just last month, on October 23, a series of pileups involving approximately 160 vehicles on I-55 near New Orleans resulted in the deaths of seven motorists and injuries to around two dozen individuals. The super fog, a combination of dense fog and smoke from marsh fires, was responsible for the treacherous road conditions that day.

Authorities are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution and to follow any guidance or warnings issued by the National Weather Service to ensure their safety during this period of super fog reoccurrence.
