In a move to address safety concerns and provide support to individuals experiencing homelessness, crews were observed on Monday morning removing tents and conducting a thorough cleanup of a homeless encampment in the West Loop area of Chicago.

The cleanup operation, centered around the intersection of Lake and Clinton streets, saw the removal of tents while debris was being swept up. Additionally, power-washing and graffiti removal were carried out to improve the overall appearance of the area.

The Department of Family and Support Services had representatives present at the site to assist those who were being displaced as a result of the cleanup. This effort aimed to provide resources and guidance for individuals forced to relocate.

The homeless encampment, which had become a source of concern for residents due to incidents of violence and drug-related activities, was predominantly located under the viaduct on Lake Street near Clinton. Pedestrians had expressed apprehension about navigating the area.

ABC7 Chicago spoke with a resident of the encampment who shared intentions of leaving his tent home on Monday but planned to return once the cleaning was completed. This sentiment was echoed by Lillie Banks, who used to live in the encampment from April to September. Banks, after finding an apartment, continues to visit regularly to check on people and express her worry for their future.

Banks expressed hope that the cleanup efforts would be accompanied by the provision of shelters or temporary housing solutions for those affected. She also acknowledged that some individuals might be able to secure accommodation with family members or seek assistance from local organizations.

The cleanup operation in the West Loop area aimed to improve the living conditions for those experiencing homelessness while addressing concerns raised by residents. By providing ongoing support and resources, the Department of Family and Support Services aims to help individuals transition to safer and more stable situations.
