Cortez Police Sgt. Michael Moran tragically lost his life on Wednesday after being shot during a traffic stop on South Broadway, according to the Cortez Police Department. Moran, a K-9 handler and a former Marine with nine years of service and two tours in Iraq, joined the police department in 2012.

The incident occurred around 11:25 a.m. near Handy Mart when shots were fired during the traffic stop, leaving Moran injured. The exchange of gunfire took place between the suspects and the police, resulting in the death of one suspect at the scene, while the other was apprehended.

Sgt. Moran, aged 46, had served alongside his loyal canine partner, Otto, who retired in 2020. In a news release, the Cortez Police Department praised Moran's dedication and sense of humor. He leaves behind two daughters, along with numerous friends and family members.

Following the tragic event, a police escort accompanied a hearse as they departed from the hospital at around 4 p.m. in honor of Sgt. Moran. In solidarity and remembrance, flags in the area have been lowered to half-staff as a tribute to the Cortez Police Department. This marks the first death of a Cortez police officer in the line of duty since 1998 when Officer Dale Claxton was killed during a traffic stop.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his condolences in response to Moran's death, stating, "I am saddened to hear of the tragic passing of the Cortez police officer in the line of duty. My thoughts and prayers go out to their family, as well as the Cortez Police Department and the community during this difficult time. This officer dedicated their career to serving and protecting their community."

The Colorado State Patrol and Cortez Police Department swiftly responded to the scene, managing traffic and redirecting southbound drivers to San Juan Drive, then onto Hartman Road, to continue their journey on South Broadway towards U.S. 160/491.

This devastating incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks and sacrifices that law enforcement officers make every day to protect their communities.
