In a tenure filled with controversy and contentious social media posts, Utah State Board of Education member Natalie Cline has once again drawn attention and criticism. Known for her inflammatory statements and divisive opinions, Cline has faced numerous complaints and calls for her resignation since her election in November 2020.

Cline's controversy-laden journey began shortly after taking office, when she mocked LGBTQ+ students in a Facebook post. This was followed by accusations of inciting violence against a teacher and suggesting that schools are complicit in "grooming" children. Her opinions, frequently shared on her social media platforms, have repeatedly sparked outrage.

The Utah State Board of Education leaders have issued statements on five separate occasions, expressing concerns about Cline's behavior. She has been formally reprimanded, with over 200 complaints being filed against her. Multiple petitions calling for her resignation have also been launched.

The situation escalated recently when Cline shared a photo of a high school athlete, implying that the student was transgender. The post resulted in threats towards the student and the school district having to provide additional security. Leaders across the state have denounced Cline's actions, and some are now even calling for her to resign.

Lawmakers are considering the unprecedented step of impeachment, which would make Cline the first state school board member in Utah to face such proceedings. The Utah House has already issued a statement condemning her, starting the impeachment process. However, it would require that Cline be found guilty of "high crimes, misdemeanors, or malfeasance in office" and face a trial in the state Senate.

Cline's controversial views and statements have positioned her as a lightning rod within the normally quiet Utah State Board of Education. Her platform during her campaign focused on opposing what she called the "indoctrination" of children, defending parental rights, and protecting the "natural family."

Despite facing multiple investigations, Cline has been cleared of any violations. The Utah State Board of Education acknowledged that its members have the right to speak under the First Amendment and that Cline's speech, however controversial, falls under that protection.

As the fallout from her latest Facebook post continues, Cline remains silent, and her re-election bid is now on the horizon. She will face competition in the Republican primaries from Amanda B. Bollinger, an experienced administrator in the Jordan School District. Additionally, Will Shiflett, overseeing a business program at Salt Lake Community College, is running as the sole Democrat in the race.

The saga surrounding Natalie Cline serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible and considerate discourse within the education system. Whether she will face impeachment or seek re-election, the controversy surrounding Cline highlights the impact that public officials can have on students and the urgent need for accountability.
