The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has expressed concern over the treatment of detained Palestinians by the Israeli military in Gaza. Images and videos have emerged on social media showing semi-naked Palestinian men being paraded in public locations, some of whom were identified as civilians, including a journalist.

Jessica Moussan, spokesperson for the ICRC, emphasized the importance of treating all detainees with humanity and dignity, in accordance with international humanitarian law. The committee called for the detainees to be treated in accordance with the principles outlined in the third Geneva convention, which includes protection against violence, insults, and exposure to public curiosity.

The video footage and photographs, allegedly filmed by at least one Israeli soldier, depicted the men being stripped to their underwear, some of them bound and blindfolded. Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, a news organization, reported that its correspondent Diaa al-Kahlout, along with his brothers, relatives, and other civilians, were rounded up, stripped, and humiliated before being taken to an unknown location.

The incident has drawn strong condemnation from various individuals and organizations. The Committee to Protect Journalists called for the journalist's immediate release, while Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi denounced the incident as a "blatant attempt at the humiliation and degradation of Palestinian men."

The images were said to have been taken in several different locations in Gaza and emerged shortly after reports of the surrender of Hamas fighters around the northern Gaza town of Jabaliya. Conflicting reports have emerged regarding the where the images were filmed, with the Israeli government claiming it happened in the vicinity of Hamas strongholds Jabaliya and Shuja'iya, while Palestinians disputed this, alleging that the men were rounded up at two UN schools being used as shelters.

It remains unclear how and why these images were leaked. While the Israel Defense Forces have yet to comment on the source of the pictures, a spokesperson suggested that all men encountered in combat areas were being arrested and interrogated. They defended the actions, stating that these individuals were discovered in Hamas strongholds and were supposed to have evacuated weeks ago.

The incident raises questions about the treatment of civilians who may have been caught up in the conflict. Under international humanitarian law, combatants captured in uniform are entitled to protection, including humane treatment and respect for their honor. However, the presence of civilians among those being paraded casts doubt on whether proper protocols are being followed.

In addition to the concerns regarding the treatment of detainees, further details have been disclosed regarding Israel's plans to prosecute detained Hamas members accused of involvement in the October 7 massacre in Israel. The Israeli law enforcement establishment acknowledges the complexity of investigating these criminal acts of terrorism and the legal issues that accompany them.

As international attention focuses on the treatment of detained Palestinians, the ICRC's call for adherence to humanitarian law and protection of detainees' rights remains a critical concern. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the delicate balance required to ensure the treatment of all individuals in accordance with international standards.
