In response to a surge in traffic accidents involving speeding and multiple fatalities, the Colorado State Patrol has announced a strict crackdown on drivers exceeding speed limits on major freeways and interstate highways. Even driving at the speed limit in hazardous conditions, such as during a snowstorm, can now result in a ticket from state troopers.

Master Trooper Gary Cutler, highlighting the alarming trend of speeding-related crashes, emphasized that drivers should not assume they can exceed the speed limit by 5-7 mph without consequences. Cutler stated, "There's always this thing of people saying, I can go five, seven, ten over and it's fine, but it isn't. These highway speed signs are placed there for several reasons."

To enforce this new enforcement policy, the Colorado State Patrol plans to increase highway patrols, scanning speeds as they go, and conducting major aircraft operations to monitor speeding violations. This heightened surveillance aims to deter drivers from exceeding speed limits and prioritize road safety.

During inclement weather patterns, Cutler urged Colorado drivers to slow down even further below the speed limit to avoid being ticketed. Adapting to wet, snowy, or icy road conditions is crucial as it affects the distance required to slow down and come to a stop. Cutler stressed, "When we talk about speeding, we do have a citation for going too fast for the conditions of the road."

The implementation of stricter speed enforcement is a response to the rising number of traffic accidents resulting from excessive speed. Colorado drivers must exercise caution on the roads, especially during hazardous weather conditions, to ensure their own safety and the safety of others.

As state troopers intensify their presence on highways and closely monitor speeds, drivers are advised to adhere to speed limits and adjust their driving accordingly to avoid unnecessary fines and penalties.
