In the Gaza Strip, children are bearing the brunt of a devastating escalation of hostilities, with UNICEF reporting an alarming increase in child casualties. Over the past 18 days, an estimated 2,360 children have lost their lives, while another 5,364 have sustained injuries due to relentless attacks, averaging more than 400 children killed or injured daily. This period marks the deadliest escalation of violence the region has witnessed since 2006.

The dire situation has prompted UNICEF to urgently call for an immediate ceasefire and sustained and unimpeded access for humanitarian assistance. Adele Khodr, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, emphasized the gravity of the violations against children's rights, including their killing and maiming, abduction, attacks on hospitals and schools, and the denial of humanitarian access. Khodr stressed that even in times of war, civilians, especially children, must be protected, and all efforts should be made to spare them from harm.

The West Bank has also witnessed a disturbing surge in casualties, with nearly a hundred Palestinians losing their lives, including 28 children, and at least 160 children sustaining injuries. Even prior to the tragic events of October 7, 2023, the West Bank already grappled with the highest levels of conflict-related violence in two decades. So far this year, 41 Palestinian children and six Israeli children have lost their lives in the region.

The situation in Gaza is increasingly becoming a stain on the collective conscience, as the death toll and number of injuries among children continue to rise. Adele Khodr expressed deep concern over the distressing footage of children being rescued from the rubble and awaiting treatment while trembling in hospitals. However, she warned that without immediate humanitarian access, the deaths from attacks could be just the beginning. The lack of access to essentials such as food, water, medical supplies, and fuel poses an even greater threat.

Fuel scarcity has severe implications for essential facilities like hospitals, desalination plants, and water pumping stations, endangering the lives of newborns and patients requiring critical care. Additionally, the population of the Gaza Strip, around 2.3 million people, faces an acute water crisis, with the majority of water systems severely impacted or non-operational. This scarcity forces vulnerable groups to rely on non-potable water sources, including high-salinity and brackish-quality water, which poses significant health risks. The Gaza wastewater treatment plants have also ceased operations, leading to the discharge of over 120,000 cubic meters of wastewater into the sea.

To address the dire situation, UNICEF is urging for the following measures:

1. An immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
2. Safe, sustained, and unimpeded access to Gaza for humanitarian aid, including water, food, medical supplies, and fuel.
3. The allowance for urgent medical cases to leave Gaza or receive critical health services.

As the international community grapples with finding a resolution to the escalating conflict in Gaza, the urgent need to protect the lives and well-being of children remains of utmost importance. UNICEF's call for an immediate ceasefire and provision of humanitarian aid is a plea to safeguard the innocent and alleviate the suffering in this war-torn region.
