Chicago, known for its brutal winters, is once again facing extreme conditions as an arctic blast continues to grip the city. According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, Chicago residents can expect a high temperature of minus-2 degrees on Sunday, accompanied by bone-chilling wind chills ranging from 20 to 30 degrees below zero throughout the day.

What makes this cold snap even more astonishing is that Chicago's temperatures are colder than some cities located within the Arctic Circle itself. Anchorage, Alaska, which is considered a cold city, is forecasted to have a high temperature of 28 degrees on Sunday - a whole 30 degrees warmer than Chicago. Meanwhile, Murmansk in Russia and Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia, will both experience higher temperatures of 10 degrees.

Surprisingly, Tromso, a city in Norway that lies within the Arctic Circle, is expected to have a relatively balmy high of 18 degrees on Sunday. Even Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon in Northern Canada, will be warmer than Chicago with a high of 1 degree above zero.

To put Chicago's extreme cold in perspective, residents would have experienced even colder conditions had they been in Bismarck, North Dakota. As of Sunday morning, Bismarck recorded an air temperature of minus-20 degrees, with wind chills plummeting to a bone-chilling minus-60 degrees. Meanwhile, Billings, Montana, also suffered from frigid weather, with a high temperature of minus-7 degrees and dangerously low wind chills reaching minus-50 degrees.

Relief from the bitter cold is on the horizon for Chicagoans, as temperatures are expected to climb back into double digits by Wednesday, potentially reaching the 30s by the weekend or early next week.

In the meantime, residents are advised to take precautions and stay indoors as much as possible, ensuring they dress in layers and cover all exposed skin to avoid frostbite and hypothermia. Local authorities have also issued several alerts and warnings regarding the extreme weather conditions, urging residents to check on their neighbors, particularly the elderly and vulnerable populations.

Chicago's ability to weather these extreme conditions serves as a testament to the city's resilience, while also reminding its residents of the importance of preparedness and looking out for one another during these harsh winter months.
