Sao Paulo, Brazil - In a phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva voiced his growing concern over the ongoing territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana, according to a statement from Brazil's presidential palace.

The dispute centers around the Esequibo region in Guyana, where significant offshore oil and gas reserves have been discovered. Tensions have been escalating between the two countries in recent weeks, with Venezuela rejecting the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the area. Instead, Venezuelan voters backed the creation of a new state in the contentious territory.

President Lula emphasized the importance of dialogue and urged both parties to avoid unilateral actions that could further escalate the situation. He also suggested that Ralph Gonsalves, the prime minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the pro tempore president of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), should address the issue.

Brazil, along with other South American nations, has expressed its support for diplomatic solutions and joint declarations released earlier this week. Showcasing its commitment to regional stability, Brazil stands ready to support and participate in dialogue initiatives aimed at resolving the dispute.

The United States, in consultation with Brazil, has also expressed its support for Guyana's sovereignty in the matter. Both governments emphasize the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana has caused widespread concern, particularly due to the potential impact on oil and gas exploration in the Esequibo region. As tensions continue to rise, the international community will closely monitor the developments and efforts towards a diplomatic resolution.

The Brazilian president's engagement and calls for dialogue highlight his commitment to regional stability and the importance of peaceful resolution in territorial disputes. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on the efforts of international leaders to find a diplomatic solution and prevent further escalation of tensions in South America.
