In a heartfelt announcement, Guinness World Records confirmed the passing of Bobi, the world's oldest dog, on Saturday at the age of 31. Bobi, a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, resided in the picturesque Portuguese village of Conqueiros.
The renowned record-keeping organization had officially bestowed the title of the world's oldest dog upon Bobi on February 2, recognizing his remarkable longevity. This significant achievement drew global attention, as more than 100 individuals from around the world gathered to celebrate his 31st birthday in May.
Rafeiro do Alentejo dogs, traditionally known for their role in safeguarding livestock, typically have an average life expectancy of 12 to 14 years, according to the American Kennel Club. However, Bobi defied those odds, surpassing expectations with flying colors. Even his mother, Gira, lived to a respectable age of 18.
Bobbi's owner, Leonel Costa, credited the dog's remarkable longevity to the serene and tranquil environment in which he resided. Costa proudly shared that Bobi was never tethered or restricted by a leash, allowing him to freely explore his surroundings within the comfort of his home. Additionally, Bobi's diet, which consisted of human food, also contributed to his remarkable health and vitality.
Dr. Karen Becker, a revered veterinarian who had the opportunity to meet Bobi on multiple occasions, expressed her sorrow over the loss. In a heartfelt Facebook post, she described him as a "sweet boy" and lamented that even after surpassing the life expectancy of every other dog in history, Bobi's time on Earth could never be enough for those who loved him.
Bobi's family, while heartbroken by his passing, fondly described him to Guinness as a calm and sociable companion. They emphasized his love for affectionate petting and cherished moments spent playing with his four feline siblings. Bobi was also known to enjoy leisurely walks around the family's farm and find solace by the cozy fireplace on colder days.
Prior to Bobi's record-breaking achievement, the title of oldest dog ever belonged to Bluey, an Australian cattle-dog who lived an impressive 29 years and 5 months, as confirmed by Guinness.
The legacy of Bobi, the world's oldest dog, will forever be cherished by those who witnessed his remarkable journey. His longevity and vibrant spirit serve as a testament to the profound bond shared between humans and their beloved pets.
