In a strong response to the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing the incident as a threat to national security. The BJP has also demanded an apology from the Chief Minister to both the ED officials and the general public.
The incident occurred during a raid on the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan in North 24 Parganas district. The raid was part of an investigation into a ration distribution scam. Reports suggest that supporters of Shahjahan allegedly assaulted the ED officers and damaged their vehicles.
The BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia expressed outrage over the attack, stating, "All the goons in West Bengal know they don't need to fear. They have protection from Mamata, who has no right to continue as CM even for a day. She should resign." Bhatia also criticized the police for their alleged lack of cooperation, stating that they refused to even speak to the ED officers when they sought help during the attack.
Amit Malviya, the BJP's co-incharge for political affairs in Bengal, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, "Continuance of the TMC government in West Bengal is a national security threat." Malviya further alleged that the attackers were potentially illegal migrants who were being patronized by local TMC leaders for political gain.
It is notable that State food minister Jyoti Priya Mallick has already been arrested in connection with the ration distribution scam. The BJP has raised concerns over the involvement of TMC leaders in the incident, highlighting their alleged role in enabling illegal migrants to serve as a vote bank.
The demand for the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee comes as the BJP alleges that her government's failure to maintain law and order poses a risk to national security. The party insists that swift action needs to be taken to restore security and accountability in West Bengal.
The BJP's strong stance against the TMC government demonstrates their determination to address the attack on the ED officials and to uphold the principles of law and order in the state. However, it remains to be seen how the political situation in West Bengal unfolds in the wake of these developments.
