In a recent address, President Joe Biden's foreign policy came under scrutiny for its lack of consistency and omission of crucial details regarding the conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, and Israel and Palestine. Critics argue that the president's equivalencies and analogies fail to capture the complex realities on the ground, leading to a flawed understanding of the situations.

Biden linked Ukraine's struggle against Russia and Israel's struggle against Hamas by framing the conflicts as battles between authoritarianism and democracy. However, concerns have been raised regarding the narrow view of democracy presented in this context.

The president condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's portrayal of Ukraine as an artificial country created by the Soviet Union, with the Russian Federation having the power to withdraw its identity at will. However, the analogy drawn between Russia's actions and Hamas's determination to destroy Israel has faced criticism.

One key point of contention lies in the portrayal of the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a defender of democracy in its struggle against Hamas. Critics argue that it is unclear how democratic Netanyahu's government truly is, especially considering his ongoing corruption trial and his inclusion of parties formerly on the U.S. State Department terrorist watchlist in his cabinet.

Netanyahu's government has also faced allegations of attempting to undermine the Israeli supreme court and steer the country towards an illiberal democracy. Their rhetoric, including talking about wiping Palestinian towns off the map, has contributed to strained relations and exclusion from previous White House invitations.

Furthermore, Biden's administration has faced criticism for its passive stance in relation to Israeli settlements in Palestinian areas and the plight of Palestinians under Israeli control. The illegal settlements, which now outnumber the population of Detroit, have effectively hindered the possibility of a two-state solution. The Israeli blockade on Gaza since 2007, which has limited access to vital resources such as water, electricity, and food, has further exacerbated the humanitarian situation.

While Biden has publicly expressed support for Palestinian dignity and self-determination, his veto of a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire has raised questions about the administration's commitment. Critics argue that by omitting the history of Israeli dispossession and oppression of Palestinians, the president fails to grasp the full complexity of the ongoing conflict.

Amidst these criticisms, dissent has emerged within Biden's State Department, with some diplomats resigning or voicing their concerns over the administration's handling of the situation. Many diplomats argue that the Israeli apartheid toward Palestinians must end and that Palestinians should be granted basic human dignity and citizenship in a state that can protect their rights. They assert that only these steps can help deradicalize Palestinian youth and foster a path towards peace and mutual understanding.

As the conflicts between Ukraine and Russia and Israel and Palestine continue to unfold, the inconsistency and omissions in Biden's foreign policy approach have come under scrutiny. Critics argue that a deeper understanding of the complexities of these conflicts is necessary for effective diplomacy and long-lasting solutions. Additionally, concerns persist that Biden's reluctance to take decisive action may further damage the United States' reputation on the global stage.
