In a recent statement, White House national security spokesman John Kirby expressed the Biden administration's concern over reports that Israel had used white phosphorus munitions supplied by the United States in an attack in Lebanon. Kirby stated that the administration would be seeking more information regarding the matter.

The Washington Post recently reported that U.S.-supplied white phosphorus was used by Israeli forces in a southern Lebanon attack in October, which resulted in the injury of at least nine civilians. While acknowledging the legitimate military utility of white phosphorus, Kirby emphasized the importance of using it consistent with the laws of armed conflict.

White phosphorus is a waxlike chemical substance that ignites upon exposure to oxygen. Although it is not typically considered a chemical weapon, its use in warfare has drawn criticism from human rights groups due to the potential harm it can cause to civilians. The substance can be used for purposes such as troop signaling or providing cover.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) previously accused Israel of employing white phosphorus during military operations, stating that it had verified its use in Lebanon and Gaza on October 10 and 11. The organization has been vocal in its opposition to the use of this chemical in attacks targeting civilians.

When questioned about the wider implications of the Israel-Hamas conflict in relation to the reports, Kirby reiterated the Biden administration's stance against the conflict expanding. He emphasized the administration's concern about the reports, stating that they did not want to see the conflict spill over into Lebanon or escalate further.

The Biden administration's response highlights their commitment to upholding the principles of the laws of armed conflict and their dedication to preventing the worsening of the situation in the region. As the investigation into the reports continues, the international community will be closely watching for any developments that may arise from this concerning revelation.
