In a recent interview on CNN's "State of the Union," Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) suggested that Israel should reconsider its military strategy if it wants to secure more funding from the United States. Sanders pointed to the thousands of reported civilian deaths in Gaza, emphasizing the need for a cessation of the bombing and a different approach to eliminate Hamas.

Currently, the United States provides $3.8 billion annually in aid to Israel. However, Sanders believes that it is crucial for the US to use its influence and demand a change in Israel's military tactics. "We have a right to say 'Sorry, you need a new military strategy. Go after Hamas, but that means - but do not kill innocent men, women, and children,'" he asserted.

When questioned about supporting additional aid for Israel, Sanders stated that he would carefully evaluate the proposed bill. He reiterated the importance of Israel ceasing its bombing of Gaza and finding an alternative solution, while expressing concern for innocent Palestinian lives.

Recently, the House had passed a $14.3 billion aid package for Israel, including $14.3 billion in cuts to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Nonetheless, it is expected to face opposition in the Democrat-controlled Senate. The Senate is anticipated to introduce a bill that encompasses aid for both Israel and Ukraine.

Sanders emphasized the urgent need for Israel to reevaluate its military approach while advocating for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He expressed the importance of restoring hope to the Palestinian people, who have been living in dire conditions with rampant unemployment and widespread poverty.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported a staggering death toll of 9,700 Palestinians as of Sunday, with thousands more injured. Meanwhile, the Oct. 7 attack resulted in the loss of over 1,400 Israeli lives. Furthermore, Hamas has taken over 200 hostages, the majority of whom remain captive.

Sanders' call for a change in strategy and his push for a two-state solution echoes the sentiments of many international leaders and activists who are striving to bring peace and stability to the region. As the debate over the aid package unfolds, the world will be closely observing Israel's response and whether it aligns with Sanders' request for a strategic shift.
