In a bold move, renowned ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's has joined the ongoing debates surrounding the conflict in Gaza, calling for a "permanent and immediate ceasefire." The company's stance, in line with its history of social activism, has sparked yet another clash with owner Unilever.
Ben & Jerry's, known for its commitment to peace and justice, has long been involved in political issues. Earlier this year, before the recent escalation of violence, the company stirred controversy by expressing concern over the treatment of Palestinians and deciding to halt the sale of its ice cream in parts of Palestine occupied by Israelis, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem. This decision faced strong backlash from the Israeli government and led to calls for a boycott by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, a prominent Jewish organization that labeled Ben & Jerry's actions as "anti-semitic."
Amid the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel, major US corporations such as Starbucks and McDonald's have faced global boycotts due to perceived support for Israel. Ben & Jerry's decision to call for a ceasefire aligns with its values of peace and social justice.
Anuradha Mittal, the head of Ben & Jerry's independent board and also the director of the left-leaning think tank, the Oakland Institute, highlighted the brand's long-standing commitment to promoting peaceful resolutions. Mittal stated, "Promoting peace has been an integral part of Ben & Jerry's DNA for four decades. Today, Ben & Jerry's Board stands steadfast with that principle by calling for peace and a permanent and immediate ceasefire."
While some US companies were quick to condemn the brutal attack on Israelis by Hamas, their response to the ongoing conflict has been relatively subdued. Ben & Jerry's decision to take a stand has brought the spotlight back onto the role of corporations in times of crisis.
Notably, Ben & Jerry's spokesperson emphasized that the call for a ceasefire was made solely on behalf of the independent board, refraining from further comment. The ice cream company has garnered a reputation for its strong political activism, and this recent move reinforces its dedication to peace and peace-building.
The larger implications of Ben & Jerry's and other corporations taking a stance on foreign conflicts remain to be seen. Nevertheless, as debates rage on, it is clear that the issue of political activism within corporate entities is becoming increasingly complicated and contentious.
