In a remarkable turn of events, a missing hiker in Hawaii was rescued thanks to the vigilant efforts of her barking dog. The Honolulu Fire Department received a 911 call on Monday about a hiker who had gone missing on the Lanipo Trail in the Kaimuki neighborhood.
Immediately, first responders sprang into action and launched a rescue operation. They conducted a thorough search on foot and from above, utilizing a helicopter to aid in the efforts. As fate would have it, other hikers reported hearing a dog's persistent barking from a steep slope without an owner.
With this valuable information, the helicopter team managed to spot the dog. A skilled rescuer then rappelled down about 20 feet from the marked trail to rescue the distressed animal. The dog was airlifted to a nearby park, where it was cared for by first responders.
As the pilot was in the process of airlifting the dog, something caught their attention. About 70 feet below where the dog stood, the crew noticed an object. Upon closer examination, they discovered that it was a bag filled with personal items.
Meanwhile, back at the park, first responders noticed the owner's name and phone number on the dog's collar. Concerned about the owner's whereabouts, they attempted to make contact, but their calls went unanswered. In an effort to ensure her safety, the Honolulu Police Department conducted a wellness check at her address. However, no one was found at home.
With the assistance of additional information obtained about the owner, including the confirmation that her car was parked at the trailhead, an extensive and coordinated search commenced. After an arduous effort, rescuers eventually located the owner hidden under dense foliage, approximately 100 feet below her bag.
Upon finding her, the 35-year-old woman received immediate basic life support treatment. She was then carefully secured onto a rescue stretcher and airlifted to the park, where she was transferred to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services for further medical attention. The entire rescue operation took about three hours from the initial 911 call.
Thanks to the unwavering dedication of the rescue team, the barking dog's remarkable vigilance, and the combined efforts of multiple agencies, a potentially dire situation ended in a successful rescue. The hiker is now receiving the necessary medical care, and her hero dog has undoubtedly earned a place in her heart forever.
