In a response to a significant backlash, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been compelled to send 2,000 migrant families back to Floyd Bennett Field after they were initially shifted to James Madison High School. The decision came after Governor Adams visited the school in Brooklyn on Tuesday night and witnessed the asylum seeker families sleeping in the auditorium and gymnasium.
Images circulating on social media depicted families sleeping on chairs, folding chairs, or even on the floor with blankets as makeshift beds. Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, who strongly opposed the decision to use the high school as a shelter for housing immigrants, expressed her gratitude towards Elon Musk for supporting her stance.
Councilwoman Vernikov took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and posted, "Thank you for helping us expose this @elonmusk @libsoftiktok. Our students are being punished & are forced to bear the burden of the migrant crisis perpetrated by @JoeBiden. This is UNACCEPTABLE. @NYCMayor must stop this now. #Endthemadness."
The city informed that by 1:10 a.m., the winds at Floyd Bennett Field had subsided enough to safely move the migrant families back. By 4:30 a.m., all 2,000 guests were successfully relocated from James Madison High School and returned to Floyd Bennett Field.
The decision to repurpose the high school as a temporary shelter for migrants was met with strong opposition from parents and other Republicans in the area. Concerns were raised not just about the impact on students' education, but also regarding security for both parents and neighbors.
Republican Assemblyman Michael Novakhov even organized an "emergency rally" outside the school on Wednesday morning, criticizing the decision to prioritize migrants over the community's safety, budget, and the education of their children.
Furthermore, the school's choice to suspend classes also drew condemnation on social media. Entrepreneur Elon Musk weighed in, stating, "This is what happens when you run out of hotel rooms. Soon, cities will run out of schools to vacate. Then they will come for your homes."
With the controversy surrounding the relocation of migrant families stirring up heated debate, the issue highlights the challenge of finding suitable accommodations during the ongoing storm and emphasizes the need for comprehensive solutions to address the growing migrant crisis.
