ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. - In a recent development, two attorneys based in Allen County have been chosen to represent Richard Allen, the suspect in the Delphi murder case. Public records indicate that Allen's court-appointed public defenders are attorneys Robert Scremin and William Lebrato, who also serves as Allen County's chief public defender. The decision was made following an order issued on Friday by Fran Gull, the Allen County judge overseeing the double-murder case.
Richard Allen faces two counts of murder in connection with the 2017 killings of Abby Williams and Libby German near Delphi. The appointment of new attorneys comes after a previous defense team, which had been representing Allen since November 2022, decided to step down. During a hearing at the Allen County Courthouse last week, Fran Gull announced the resignation of the former legal representatives.
One of Allen's previous attorneys, Bradley Rozzi, raised concerns about the judge's conduct and requested that Fran Gull be removed from the case. Rozzi claimed that she had "ambushed" and "coerced" the defense team into resigning. However, Gull filed court documents on Friday to strike Rozzi's motion from the record, indicating that she stands by her decisions.
The next hearing in the Delphi murder case is scheduled for Tuesday in Carroll County. It is anticipated that the newly appointed attorneys, Robert Scremin and William Lebrato, will begin their representation of Richard Allen in the upcoming proceedings.
The Delphi murder case has gained significant attention and has been a subject of ongoing investigation since 2017. Abby Williams and Libby German were tragically killed while hiking on a trail near Delphi, sparking a nationwide manhunt for their killer. The appointment of new attorneys brings a new chapter to the case, as Richard Allen prepares to face the charges against him in court.
