In a tragic incident that has captured international attention, a drone attack targeting a little-discussed US military desert outpost in northeastern Jordan has resulted in the death of three American soldiers and left at least 34 others injured. Located near the demilitarized zone on the Jordan-Syria border, the outpost, known as Tower 22, serves as a critical base for US forces.

The area surrounding Tower 22, known as Rukban, was once home to a sprawling refugee camp, housing over 100,000 people who had fled the rise of the Islamic State group's so-called caliphate in 2014. However, due to concerns about infiltration by extremist elements, Jordan prevented the refugees from entering its territory, resulting in the decline of the camp's population to approximately 7,500 individuals, according to United Nations estimates.

The base was initially established by the Jordanian military to monitor the border, but in the wake of US forces entering Syria in late 2015, its importance grew. Today, Tower 22 houses around 350 US Army and Air Force personnel, including engineering, aviation, logistics, and security troops, providing support for American operations in the region.

One of the significant advantages of Tower 22's location is its close proximity to the Syrian border, making it an ideal entry point for US forces entering or exiting Syria. Another US military stronghold, al-Tanf in Syria, lies just 20 kilometers north of Tower 22. This base is strategically positioned along a Syrian highway leading to Iraq, including the former Islamic State stronghold of Mosul. Additionally, it serves as a potential route for weapons shipments from Iran.

Jordan has long been a crucial base for US troops, given its strategic location bordering several Middle Eastern countries. Approximately 3,000 American soldiers are usually stationed across Jordan, utilizing the nation as a vital staging point for regional operations.

However, the US presence in Jordan carries the risk of inciting public anger, particularly among the country's Palestinian population. Recent mass demonstrations in Jordan against Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in significant civilian casualties, demonstrate the sensitive nature of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It is estimated that around 3 million Palestinians reside among Jordan's total population of 11.5 million.

The attack on Tower 22 has further strained the situation, with Jordan initially denying the existence of the US military base within its borders. This incident raises concerns not only regarding the safety of American personnel in the region but also the potential political repercussions for Jordan and its ruler, King Abdullah II, who is a key US ally.

The attack on Tower 22 serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by military forces stationed in volatile regions. It underscores the need for continued international attention and cooperation to address the complex security threats in the Middle East.
