In a recent statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confidently asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will emerge victorious in all constituencies in Assam where Rahul Gandhi's "Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra" has been conducted. Sarma took a dig at Rahul, insinuating that the BJP depends on him for their success in these areas.
Furthermore, the Assam CM had previously stated that Rahul Gandhi would be arrested following the Lok Sabha elections. An FIR has been filed by the Assam police against Rahul and other Congress leaders after a clash erupted between them and the police, when their yatra was denied entry into Guwahati.
Sarma has gone a step further by directing the police to initiate the filing of an FIR against Rahul Gandhi, and an Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to investigate the matter.
The tweet posted by Karnataka Congress leader Priyank Kharge drew attention to Sarma's statement, questioning why the Assam CM is waiting until after the Lok Sabha elections to arrest Rahul Gandhi. Kharge suggested that if Rahul had indeed violated the law, Sarma should take immediate action. He also accused the Assam CM of neglecting neighboring Manipur and exploiting the people of Assam.
To this, Himanta Biswa Sarma responded with a concise remark, stating, "We need Rahul Gandhi during election brother."
Priyank Kharge retaliated by targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his response, claiming that without his star campaigners, including the media, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Income Tax (IT) department, and the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Sarma's political prowess would weaken. Furthermore, Kharge challenged Sarma's leader, implying that he has difficulty addressing press conferences or public gatherings without a teleprompter.
The war of words between Himanta Sarma and Rahul Gandhi has been acrimonious, with both leaders openly attacking each other. Rahul Gandhi has branded Sarma as the most corrupt chief minister in the country, while Sarma has referred to the Congress leader as "Ravan" (a mythological character symbolizing evil) and "darpok" (coward).
It remains to be seen how this verbal battle will influence the political landscape in the state of Assam, especially as the Lok Sabha elections draw nearer.
