In a move that could further fracture the Opposition front, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) intends to contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, three seats in Assam, and now, all seven seats in Delhi.
Kejriwal asserted that this decision is in line with the will of the people of Delhi, indicating a strong desire for AAP representation in the upcoming general elections. The party has already unilaterally announced its plans to contest all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, as well as naming candidates for three seats in Assam.
The Delhi Chief Minister expressed confidence in winning all the seats in Punjab and Chandigarh, indicating a strong belief in the popularity and strength of his party. He urged the people of Delhi to support AAP's candidates and strengthen the hands of Bhagwant Mann in Punjab, claiming that this would empower the state and prevent interference from the central government and the governor.
The announcement by AAP comes as a blow to the opposition front in India and signals a lack of unity regarding seat sharing among political parties. It also adds to the challenges faced by the Congress party, which had hoped to contest at least a few of Delhi's seven seats.
The Congress party has already faced setbacks in Punjab and Bengal, where AAP and Trinamool Congress respectively announced their decision to go solo in the elections. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of Bengal and the Trinamool Congress chief, emphasized the importance of fielding a single candidate against the BJP on each seat, with the dominant party in the respective region being the contender. She confidently stated that Trinamool Congress was the only party competent enough to defeat the BJP in Bengal and predicted that the Congress would obtain only 40 seats, bringing joy to the BJP camp.
AAP's intentions to contest all Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, Assam, and now Delhi is likely to intensify the electoral competition in these regions, raising the stakes for all participating parties. As the general elections draw nearer, the political landscape continues to evolve, posing new challenges and opportunities for each party involved.
