Sunday morning in the Greater Boston Area will start with patchy fog and mostly cloudy skies, with high temperatures expected to reach the low 60s. This could potentially break the record high for Boston of 64 degrees set back in 1907.

However, the main concern for the region is an approaching storm system, which is expected to bring heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, and potential coastal flooding on Sunday night into Monday morning. Consequently, a First Alert has been issued for this period.

The first half of Sunday should remain dry, except for rain developing in the western parts of New England. As the day progresses, rain showers will move into the Boston area and expand north and eastward during the evening. Simultaneously, winds will intensify from the south. Highs are forecasted to range from the upper 50s to low 60s in the southern parts of New England, while the northern areas will experience temperatures in the mid-40s to low 50s.

During Sunday night and into Monday, an intense low-pressure area is expected to develop south of New England, moving over southeastern Massachusetts early Monday morning and eventually exiting through eastern Maine Monday afternoon. This system will bring strong southerly winds, heavy rain, embedded thunderstorms, and the potential for localized flooding and power outages due to the damaging winds along the coast.

Coastal areas, especially those facing south, could experience gusts of 50-60 MPH, which could potentially lead to power outages. Additionally, the early morning high tide may result in flooding along these shorelines. Rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches are anticipated, with locally higher amounts, primarily falling on Sunday night into early Monday morning.

The storm system may also bring significant snowfall to parts of New England. Western New England, including the Berkshires, could see accumulations of 3-6 inches, while northern Vermont, northern New Hampshire, and northwestern Maine may experience heavier snowfall, with totals ranging from 8-12 inches.

However, there is still some uncertainty regarding snow totals due to the timing of the cold air behind the storm as it moves through New England.

Following the storm, Tuesday is expected to bring drier conditions, with mainly dry weather persisting through the middle of the week. Temperatures will be more moderate, with highs in the low 40s and lows in the low to mid-30s starting from Tuesday.
