As Israel's military prepares to intensify its operations in Gaza City, one location stands out as a major focal point of battle: al-Shifa Hospital. According to recently declassified intelligence materials shared by IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, Hamas terrorists have transformed the hospital into a hub for their military operations, operating both beside and beneath the medical center in a network of tunnels.

"Hamas uses hospitals as terror infrastructures," stated Hagari, showcasing satellite imagery that revealed the presence of tunnel shafts and concealed weapons around the hospital premises. The hospital, which has been treating an increasing number of wounded Gazans, has become a symbol of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Former deputy head of Israel's National Security Council, Itamar Yaar, emphasized the necessity for Israel to seize and dismantle the information systems within al-Shifa Hospital. While the hospital's director had been advised to evacuate patients, experts anticipate a challenging and potentially bloody confrontation, though a full-scale airstrike is unlikely.

Al-Shifa Hospital, which originally served as a British Army barracks, has a longstanding history of involvement in the Israeli-Hamas conflict. In the 2014 conflict, Hamas frequently used the hospital to conduct briefings for international journalists. Amnesty International later discovered that Hamas had utilized certain areas of the hospital to commit abductions, torture, and killings of Palestinians accused of collaboration with Israel.

IDF spokesperson Hagari further revealed that Hamas was also utilizing the medical facility to store fuel and ammunition. As the hospital stands as a strategic point for Hamas, Israel faces a dilemma in deciding how to remove Hamas' military infrastructure from Gaza without causing harm to civilians.

The international community has closely monitored the situation, given the heightened scrutiny surrounding strikes on hospitals and ambulances in Gaza. While some cases were initially attributed to Israeli actions, evidence has since emerged indicating otherwise. The recent strike on Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital on October 17, for example, was caused by a misfired Palestinian Islamic Jihad rocket.

Israeli fighter jets also targeted an ambulance outside al-Shifa Hospital on Saturday, resulting in casualties, as the Hamas-run health ministry reported. Hagari stressed that every Israeli strike is based on intelligence information, and Hamas has been reportedly using ambulances for military purposes, creating complications in evacuation efforts.

The battle for al-Shifa Hospital remains a significant turning point in the fight against Hamas. As Israel seeks to neutralize Hamas' command and control centers, the underground network beneath the hospital poses a dangerous challenge, potentially booby-trapped and filled with thousands of Hamas fighters, fuel, and ammunition.

Israel will proceed strategically, seeking to move civilians currently taking shelter at the hospital to safety before gaining control of the compound and its subterranean assets. The international community watches closely as Israel navigates the delicate balance of dismantling Hamas' infrastructure while minimizing harm to civilians in the midst of this intense conflict.
