In a surprising turn of events, the cancellation of a concert by Jewish American singer Matisyahu at Santa Fe's Meow Wolf venue has ignited accusations of antisemitism. The venue's ties to a prominent Democratic senator's wife have added further complexity to the situation.
Matisyahu, known for his popular songs "One Day" and "King Without a Crown," had his sold-out Wednesday show abruptly canceled by Meow Wolf, leaving fans disappointed and prompting pro-Palestinian activists to claim credit for pressuring the venue. The singer, whose birth name is Matthew Paul Miller, expressed his frustration in a statement, declaring that the show was canceled due to a group of staff members refusing to work rather than any security concerns.
Records show that Meow Wolf's chief impact officer is Julie Heinrich, the wife of Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM). Julie held positions as the chief of staff and executive director of the Meow Wolf Foundation until May 2023, according to tax documents reviewed by the Washington Examiner. This connection could potentially become an issue for Heinrich, who has previously advocated for the resumption of aid to the Hamas-tied United Nations Relief and Works Agency.
The Washington Examiner reached out to Meow Wolf and Senator Heinrich's office for comment but received no response at the time of reporting. However, the National Republican Senatorial Committee's spokeswoman, Maggie Abboud, condemned Meow Wolf and Julie Heinrich's alleged antisemitic actions against Matisyahu. Abboud urged Senator Heinrich to denounce the venue's decision immediately.
Meanwhile, Matisyahu found himself facing another cancellation, this time at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson, Arizona. The artist's Thursday concert was called off just hours before the show, citing safety concerns and staff shortages. In response, Matisyahu offered to supplement their staffing on his own dime but to no avail. He expressed his belief that these cancellations stemmed from either antisemitism or confusion regarding his empathetic stance towards both Israelis and Palestinians.
Julie Heinrich's LinkedIn profile indicates that her role as Meow Wolf's chief impact officer involves various areas such as social impact and sustainability, government affairs, community engagement, and employee volunteerism. She was also listed as the executive director on the Meow Wolf Philanthropic Foundation's recent tax forms.
It is worth noting that Meow Wolf's private foundation announced its 2023-24 grantees in November of the previous year. Julie Heinrich, at that time, emphasized the organization's commitment to strengthen art and culture ecosystems within communities, especially among organizations serving underprivileged individuals.
Prior to her involvement with Meow Wolf, Julie Heinrich had an eight-year tenure at the Washington, D.C.-based public relations firm Weber Shandwick.
The controversy surrounding the cancellation of Matisyahu's concert has raised concerns about the rising trend of cancel culture and its potential implications for artists based on their religious and political beliefs. Representative Ritchie Torres (D-NY) took to social media to condemn the incident, labeling it as a textbook example of anti-Zionism turning into antisemitism.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how all parties involved will address the accusations and the impact it may have on the political landscape.
