88-Year-Old Man Dies After ATV Breaks Through Ice in Hancock County

HANCOCK COUNTY, Maine - Tragedy struck on a fishing trip as an 88-year-old man lost his life when the side-by-side ATV he was a passenger in broke through the ice. The incident occurred in Hancock County, Maine, where Floyd Hardison of Waltham was enjoying a day of fishing with his son and grandsons.

According to authorities, the group was heading back to their vehicles on the shore when tragedy struck. The side-by-side ATV, driven by Hardison's adult grandson, suddenly broke through the ice, approximately 400 yards from the shoreline.

Hardison's grandson managed to free himself from the sinking ATV and make it onto the ice. However, Floyd Hardison was unable to escape the sinking vehicle and sadly sank to the bottom along with the ATV.

Wardens immediately launched a search and rescue operation. After several intense hours, they were able to locate and recover Hardison's body in approximately ten feet of water.
