In a shocking development, a court in Qatar has handed down the death penalty to eight former Indian Navy personnel who have been held on undisclosed charges since August 2022. The Indian government has expressed deep shock at the verdict and is actively exploring all legal options, according to a statement released by the external affairs ministry.

The death sentence was delivered by Qatar's Court of First Instance, although no official details have been released by authorities in Doha. Given the confidential nature of the proceedings, the external affairs ministry refrained from providing further comments on the case.

The eight individuals, comprising seven officers and one sailor, were working for Al Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, a private firm owned by an Oman Air Force officer. Their work involved providing training and other services to Qatar's armed forces and security agencies, specifically overseeing the induction of Italian-made midget stealth submarines into the Qatari Navy.

The Indian government has been closely following the case and has been actively providing consular and legal assistance to the detainees. The Ministry of External Affairs has assured that they will take up the matter with Qatari authorities. Meanwhile, the families of the eight Indian nationals have filed a mercy plea to the emir of Qatar, in the hopes of receiving clemency during the holy month of Ramzan or the upcoming Eid festivals.

The exact charges against the eight men have not been disclosed by either the Indian or Qatari authorities. The Indian government has intervened to secure consular access for the detainees, allowing them to meet with their families and facilitating communication through phone calls.

These former naval personnel, who have been decorated with military and civilian honors, held senior positions within the Indian Navy. One of the detained Indians, Commander (retired) Purnendu Tiwari, served as Al Dahra's managing director and commanded several warships during his tenure with the navy.

The case took a curious turn when an Indian journalist and their spouse were ordered to leave Qatar for reporting on the matter. Charges have also been framed against two Qatari nationals, including Khamis al-Ajmi, who was previously held in solitary confinement before being granted bail.

India and Qatar have had longstanding defense ties, with defense cooperation being a crucial aspect of their bilateral agenda. Despite the close relationship, Qatari authorities have maintained a surprising silence on the case, leaving many perplexed.

As the legal proceedings continue, the Indian government is acting in accordance with international laws and protocols. The families of the eight naval veterans are hopeful that their mercy plea to the emir of Qatar will bring about a reconsideration of the death sentence.

It remains to be seen how this delicate situation unfolds, as both the Indian and Qatari governments work towards resolving the case and ensuring the well-being of the detained individuals.
