Wisconsin's Political Landscape Shifts as New Redistricting Plan Brings Uncertainty to State Assembly Control

After more than a decade of Republican dominance in Wisconsin's state legislature due to gerrymandered district lines, a recent overhaul of the legislative map has disrupted the anti-democratic reality in the state. The Wisconsin Supreme Court's decision in December to strike down the previous maps led to the passing of new maps by the Republican-led legislature, drawn by Democrat Governor Tony Evers.
The newly approved assembly map aims to rectify the severe gerrymandering of the past decade by undoing cracking of Democratic votes in areas like Sheboygan and Green Bay. By creating more competitive districts and adding safe Democratic districts in the south-central part of the state, the new map has opened up possibilities for Democrats to potentially win control of the state assembly in the upcoming November election.
Moreover, the new plan, while still biased towards Republicans, offers a more balanced playing field compared to the previous map. In a perfectly tied election scenario, the new map would benefit Republicans with an expected 6% extra seats, a decrease from the 15% boost under the previous plan.
Despite the shift in control being up for grabs, there remains a lack of individually competitive districts, with the focus being on raising the Democratic floor and lowering the Republican ceiling. This reconfiguration of the political landscape in Wisconsin underscores the significance of the competitive districts now more than ever.
According to John Johnson, a research fellow at Marquette Law School, the new map represents a significant change from the previous gerrymandered districts. Though some skepticism arose when Republicans agreed to adopt the Democratic-drawn map, it appears to be a strategic move as it allows Republicans to maintain control of the state senate until 2026.
The new assembly map not only brings uncertainty to the state assembly control after a decade-long Republican stronghold but also sets the stage for a potentially more balanced political environment in Wisconsin's future elections.
