In a strong message of support for the LGBTQ community, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers vetoed a bill on Tuesday that sought to prohibit transgender high school athletes from competing on teams according to their gender identity. The bill, passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature, was met with opposition from Democrats and advocates for transgender rights.
Surrounded by Democratic lawmakers, transgender advocates, the mayor of Madison, and other supporters, Governor Evers vetoed the bill in the Capitol. In his veto message, he emphasized the detrimental impact such legislation would have on the mental health of LGBTQ individuals and the potential for increased harassment, bullying, and violence.
Governor Evers vowed to protect the rights and well-being of LGBTQ Wisconsinites, stating that he will not allow radical policies that threaten their safety, dignity, and sense of belonging. He firmly believes in creating an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can live authentically without fear or discrimination.
The proposed bill aimed to restrict high school athletes to participate only on teams that correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth. While supporters argued it was a matter of fairness for non-transgender athletes, opponents countered that there was no evidence of any significant issue with transgender participation in Wisconsin high school sports. They viewed the ban as discriminatory and harmful to transgender youth.
It is important to note that the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association already has policies in place for transgender athletes. These policies mirror the requirements set by the NCAA, stating that transgender athletes must undergo hormone therapy before being eligible to compete on teams according to their gender identity.
The rejection of the bill by Governor Evers comes amidst a broader national conversation surrounding transgender inclusion in sports. At least 20 states have implemented their versions of a blanket ban on transgender athletes participating in K-12 and collegiate sports. However, the Biden administration is set to finalize a proposal that would forbid such bans by asserting that they violate Title IX, the landmark gender-equity legislation enacted in 1972.
Governor Evers' veto serves as a reaffirmation of his commitment to promoting inclusivity, equality, and the rights of the LGBTQ community. As the nation continues to navigate these complex issues, the battle for transgender rights in sports remains a subject of ongoing debate and legal scrutiny.
