Article:
A winter weather advisory has been issued for various parts of Minnesota as a snowstorm is expected to hit the region. The National Weather Service has forecasted snowfall totals ranging from 3 to 5 inches, with heavier amounts likely along and just south of the I-94 corridor. The advisory, which extends from 7 p.m. Thursday to 10 a.m. Friday, warns of slippery road conditions that could impact the morning commute.

The first low-pressure system has already brought patchy snow to southern and central Minnesota on Thursday, and snow coverage is expected to expand throughout the evening. The snowfall is predicted to persist overnight until Friday morning. Models from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) show similar precipitation patterns for the timeframe.

Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling and to slow down due to potentially hazardous conditions. To stay informed about road conditions, travelers can call 511 for the latest updates. Additionally, MPR News will provide updated weather information for Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Looking ahead, a stronger storm system is expected to arrive on Sunday and linger into Monday and early Tuesday. This storm has the potential to bring heavier snowfall and stronger winds. Some areas could see 6 inches or more of snow from Sunday through Tuesday, with the possibility of double-digit totals in certain locations.

The upcoming storm has the potential to create very difficult or even impossible travel conditions in parts of Minnesota and western Wisconsin. It is important for residents to monitor updates and prepare accordingly. The eastern side of the storm may experience a mix of rain and wintry precipitation, which could impact snowfall totals.

In terms of temperatures, the average high for the Twin Cities on March 23 is typically 45 degrees. However, this Saturday, metro area highs will only reach the 30s, while parts of northern and west-central Minnesota will see highs in the 20s. Sunday's highs will mainly be in the 30s, with some areas in far northern Minnesota reaching the 20s.

On a positive note, the anticipated snowfall will help reduce wildfire danger and contribute to replenishing soil moisture, as reported by the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. Currently, approximately 74.74 percent of Minnesota is experiencing drought conditions, including the entire Twin Cities metro area.

The winter weather conditions and drought status in Minnesota are part of broader regional trends. Significant portions of Iowa and Wisconsin are also experiencing drought, with eastern Iowa facing extreme drought conditions.

For live weather updates, listeners can tune in to MPR News at 7:35 a.m., 9:35 a.m., and 4:39 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday. The National Weather Service offices in the Twin Cities, Duluth, La Crosse, Sioux Falls, and Grand Forks will also release updated forecast information.

As the snowstorm approaches, individuals are reminded to stay safe and take necessary precautions during travel.
