Two consecutive winter storms, named Winter Storm Ronnie and Winter Storm Sawyer by The Weather Channel, are set to bring heavy snowfall and gusty winds to parts of the northern United States over the weekend and into early next week.

Winter Storm Ronnie, the first system, has already spread light to moderate snow from the Midwest into the interior Northeast. As it tracks eastward, upstate New York and northern New England will experience heavy snowfall, making travel conditions slippery and dangerous. The Twin Cities metro area and Milwaukee have already received 6 to 8 inches of snowfall with more expected in the region. The White Mountains of New Hampshire could see up to two feet of snow.

Winter Storm Sawyer, the second system, will initially affect the West with snow in higher elevations before moving into the Plains. By Sunday and Monday, it is expected to develop into a strong low-pressure system, bringing snow to the Northern and Central Plains as well as parts of the upper Midwest. Minneapolis-St. Paul and Fargo, North Dakota, will witness significant snowfall, while the Twin Cities may experience a mix of sleet or rain by Monday. The combination of heavy snowfall and strong wind gusts poses the risk of blizzard conditions in the Northern Plains. Snowfall is anticipated to continue until Tuesday in the upper Midwest.

Both storms aim to make up for a lack of snowfall during the winter season. Minneapolis, for instance, has received only 14 inches of snow, over 30 inches below average. However, the upcoming snowfall may bring the city closer to its typical seasonal average.

The meteorological phenomena are expected to bring relief to areas that had been struggling with snow deficits. Moderate to heavy snow is forecasted in parts of the Cascades, Sierra, and Rockies this weekend. Northern Plains and upper Midwest areas may experience very heavy snowfall, with snowfall totals potentially surpassing a foot in eastern Dakotas and Minnesota.

Travel disruptions are expected throughout the affected regions, with slippery roads and reduced visibility due to snow and gusty winds. Authorities urge caution and preparedness for those traveling in the impacted areas.

As the storms unfold, meteorologists will closely monitor the situation and update the forecasts to ensure the safety and preparedness of residents in the affected regions.
