Well over 100 schools in West Michigan have been forced to close on Friday, March 22, due to a winter storm that has swept across the state. Winter-weather advisories were in effect and strong winds, along with heavy snowfall, were expected throughout the day.

Numerous counties have been affected by the closures, including Kent, Ottawa, Muskegon, Allegan, Ionia, Van Buren, Montcalm, and Newaygo. School districts such as Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Byron Center, Forest Hills, Ravenna, Grandville, Wyoming, Hesperia, Kent City, Northview, Kenowa Hills, Cedar Springs, White Cloud, Allendale, Belding, Greenville, Fremont, Newaygo, and Grant have all announced closures.

The decision to close schools was made after district leaders assessed the road conditions early Friday morning and took into consideration the forecast for continued snowfall throughout the day. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids reported that snow began falling in the early hours of Friday and is expected to persist into the evening. Travel is expected to be slow and difficult due to heavy snowfall in certain regions.

The weather service also noted on Facebook that a significant accumulation of 4 or more inches is likely to occur in the Grand Rapids to Alma region. In response to the deteriorating conditions, the Kent, Ionia, Van Buren, and Mecosta-Osceola Intermediate School Districts have also announced closures.

Motorists have been advised by state police to reduce their speeds on area roads. The Kent County Road Commission began treating bridges, ramps, and other areas with salt as early as 4 a.m. in an effort to mitigate the impact of the snowfall. However, roads are still expected to be slushy, making travel hazardous.

For a complete list of school closures, concerned individuals can refer to WZZM-13 school closings. It is important for residents and drivers to stay informed about the latest weather updates and to exercise caution when venturing outside during this winter storm.

As the snow continues to fall across West Michigan, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize safety and stay updated on any further developments regarding the weather conditions.
