**Jane Buffett Seeks Court Intervention to Remove Co-Trustee of Late Husband's $275 Million Estate**
In a significant legal move, Jane Buffett, widow of the late musician Jimmy Buffett, has filed a petition to have the co-trustee of her husband's $275 million estate removed, citing conduct that has been described as "belittling, disrespectful, and condescending" towards her. The petition was submitted to a Los Angeles superior court and made public through Rolling Stone.
Prior to his death in September 2023, Jimmy Buffett appointed accountant Rick Mozenter from the business management firm Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman LLP as Jane Buffett's co-trustee. Mozenter subsequently brought in attorney Jeffrey Smith to assist in managing the estate. According to the petition, Jane Buffett alleges that Mozenter and Smith have been "openly hostile and adversarial" towards her, claiming that their actions have been directly against her best interests both personally and as the primary beneficiary of the Marital Trust.
The petition specifically accuses Mozenter of failing to execute his duties adequately, including not providing Jane Buffett with essential information about Trust assets and finances, leaving her uninformed about her financial situation. Jane Buffett further contends that Mozenter has spent over a year obstructing her attempts to obtain basic financial data, all while billing the Trust approximately $1.75 million for various services including accounting, tax, business management, and trustee services.
The complications in the estate’s administration have persisted for 20 months since Jimmy Buffett's passing. Jane Buffett’s filing claims that the management of the Marital Trust has been "plainly deficient," repeating that both Mozenter and Smith have acted in a manner counterproductive to her interests. The situation escalated the previous month when, after Jane Buffett requested Mozenter and Smith to step down from their roles, Mozenter allegedly attempted to strip her of her co-trustee title to gain full control over the estate.
Jane Buffett has turned to the court for assistance to address what she describes as an "untenable" situation. As of now, Rick Mozenter has not responded to Rolling Stone's request for a statement.
